A taste of the WEEKEND whenever you want!!

One of WCM&WDCs’ favourite bands of the moment ‘Weekend’ have been kind enough to provide us with further insight into themselves and their sound.

Who are you and where are you from?

We are Weekend and we're from San Francisco. Shaun sings and plays bass/baritone guitar, Kevin plays guitar and Taylor plays drums. We all grew up in the same town a little north of SF called Novato.

Describe Weekend’s sound in three words:

Raw Cave Punk

Where does your band name originate from?

The name doesn't really have any relevance, or make any logical sense unless you listen to the music and the lyrics along with it. To be honest it's a bit of a sick joke. The word weekend typically conjures ideas of relief and freedom and relaxation. People look forward to weekends but in all honesty it's just this period of suspended reality for most people. And when paired with the darker and more melodramatic content of our songs, it creates a strange sort of paradox which is what our songs are about. That turmoil. The middle grey.

We also appreciate the ambiguity of it.

The best and worst band you have ever been compared to?

I grew up listening to Joy Division so anytime that pops up I'm pretty thrilled - but I think it's also an easy tag to throw on us. The JAMC reference is also pretty misleading. I think we reference them tonally, but as far as songwriting goes I think we're closer to JD, or Sonic Youth or My Bloody Valentine.

I can't really say we that I've heard a bad comparison - I think the worst part of comparisons especially with blog culture is the circular referencing. In general, bloggers can be pretty lazy and it's easy to just quote what another blog has compared us to or some scene they've lumped us in.

The strangest summation of your band and or songs?

"Sounds like being trapped in a tin can with a wolverine."

What’s next for Weekend?

We're thrilled to announce that we're working with Slumberland Records on our debut full length which will hopefully see the light of day this summer.

We also have a split 7" with Young Prisms being released in May on Transparent Records. And hopefully touring the US and a few dates in Europe near the end of Summer.

Finally, who would you choose to be an honorary member of Weekend for one night only? Tell us why and what would they do?

Kevin Shields as soundman while we play as house band at a funeral.

You can enjoy recorded sounds through their myspace profile in the form of three excellent tracks Youth Haunts, All-American and Tiara with an amazing amount of audible noise, its build up of guitars, rolling drums and vocals sitting low in the mix providing you with an almost nail biting edge of your seat experience. We all love the weekend and it won't be long before we can all have a taste of this form of WEEKEND whenever we want!!
